Montesiepi is an ancient country estate dating
back to the 12th century with annexes and green
spaces which cover the entire hilltop to the nearby
Cistercian Abbey of San Galgano. It has been restored
to offer a generous and dynamic hospitality to
its demanding international clientele. The beauty
and uniqueness of Montesiepi is the Hermitage
of San Galgano. Inside the rotunda of the hermitage,
next to the house, visitors will find the legendary
Sword in the Stone, which according to legend,
was left there by the valiant and wealthy knight,
Galgano, over 800 years ago. The property sits
on a sweet hill overlooking the splendid gothic
ruins of the most celebrated Cistercian Abbey
of San Galgano. La Cappella features an elegant
country decor, spacious living rooms with beautiful
fireplaces, a portico with a characteristic wood
burning oven and stone well, ample gardens, and
breathtaking views. Guests will enjoy "frette"
linen and bathrobes. Buffets and candlelight dinners
can be arranged.
Not to be missed in your area: visit to the Church
of Montesiepi and of San Galgano... The round-shaped
part of the church of Montesiepi is a Romanesque
architecture dating back to the end of the XII
century. It was first created to commemorate the
local saint, Ansano, and this had to be his sepulchral
monument. The attached XIV century chapel preserves
a beautiful cycle of frescoes painted by Ambrogio
Lorenzetti(1340 ca.). Equally important is the
famous Abbey of San Galgano, one of the first
gothic churches of Tuscany. The building was once
splendid and richly decorated, but it has since
gradually detoriated and its materials were appropriated
to face the severe economical crisis the religious
community has undergone through the centuries.
This is the famous abbey with no roof, where the
floor is green with grass, often pictured as one
of the most dramatic locations of this region.
